 MY TAKE ON THE PARK

When in San Diego should you enjoy the perfect weather while relaxing pool side, enjoy the beach or see a Padres game? Considering the way the Padres have been playing I would say choices 1 and 2 .. But, if in the San Diego area, a Padres game is definitely worth the trip.

A unique exterior, Petco's is sand colored with white supports, the exterior is much like Cleveland. Because of the location however, fountains adorn the park's exterior. After walking through the turnstiles, make your way, surprisingly, up 2 flights of open aired stairs. Yes, they have an escalator but only one. Other entrances may be more suitable considering the stairs at the main entrance. The left field entrance is more  of a ramp.

Once up the stairs you are at field level. An endless array of choices await. Always happy they kept the "Swinging Friar" mascot and the hot dogs are called Friar Dogs. Randy Jones's barbecue as well as a sweet shop all await. The hot dogs are served on a sesame seed bun so that adds points to the food.

The field is perfect, as it should be in California. Whoever said dark blue seats don't work should take a look at San Diego. Navy blue seats surround the park leaving the outfield open. Unlike the old Shea, the outfield looks out onto a park where you can bring a blanket and relax watching the Padres. It really is a great vantage point to see the game. The Padres also know you are sitting out here, they have provided a huge screen showing the game. A great feature is they also show road games on this screen. 4:00 on a Tuesday, Padres are on the east coast, head over to Petco Park with your blanket and watch the Friars take on the Phillies, I like that.

Petco Park is a very relaxing place to see a game. Don't expect too much fan interaction though, fans here are all about being at the game, not cheering for the home team. They do cheer, but only if a run scores or the scoreboard advises them to.

A few things about Petco, there is really only one advisable way to get to the game, take the Trolley. For $2.50 you will be let off right in front of the park. The Park is located in the Gas Lamp Quarter and on Saturday nights gets very crowded. Plus, with the trolley you can enjoy the scene around the park which really enhances the whole experience.  Parking lots are available around the park, I believe parking is $20, make you want to take the trolley.

For a new ballpark, I was surprised that views of the field were not available all the way around the lower deck, and like Philly, the upper level can be reached by stairs .. I also don't get the two huge blocks down both lines of the park, maybe an elevator or something.
